Bilingual upbringing
An important pillar of our educational philosophy
Everyone is talking about bilingual upbringing. How does this work at Bio Kids?
Age
Children up to age 6, due to their particularly strong ability to
imitate their role models, can achieve equivalent language
pronunciation and intonation.
Especially very young children can learn a second or third language
in addition to the mother tongue. Furthermore, the early learning of
languages provides a significant contribution to the cognitive
development of children. The following teaching methods are important:
Native speaker
For
language acquisition in children, a "native speaker" (i.e., a person
that has learned the language from birth as their mother tongue) is
useful. Children learn in play, songs and fun activities. They
naturally acquire speech rhythm, melody and intonation as well as the
sentence structure and the punctuation of a language and slowly learn
to use them.
First comes understanding, then using!
One person, one language
It is crucial that throughout the care period all persons in the
daycare speak in their own language consequently. The native speaker
speaks exclusively the foreign language, in our case English. The
English-speaking person should master the native language of the
children so that the children can go to them with any questions or
concerns.
The immersion method
Immersion means "language bath". The new language is colloquial and
everyday language. At the beginning, everything in the new language is
reinforced and explained by signs, pictures, gestures and facial
expressions.
Rules and vocabulary are not important at this time. The children learn
unconsciously. First, they understand, and then gradually begin to
speak. The "language bath" method is child-friendly and thus
well-suited for the daycare.
The children are introduced to the new language at their own pace
without any pressure. Children learn intuitively through immersion.
